Parke joins the Bells the first Thursday of the month to deliver the lastest news on Western film and TV with his Henry's Western Round-up report. With his extension knowledge and passion for Western film, Henry's new book The Greatest Westerns Ever Made And The People Who Made Themis a "must have read" for anyone interested in Western film. In this episode Henry brings us up-to-date with the latest news on Alec Baldwin, Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga, and the new INSP series, Blue Ridge.
CHRIS ENSS is a New York Times best-selling author who has been writing about women in the Old West for more than 30 years. She has penned more than 50 published books on the subject. An acclaimed author, she has received multiple awards. As the Executive Director of the Will Rogers Medallion Award this episode begins with Chris sharing exciting news about this organization's future plans!
Next, we begin our in-depth conversation about her new book The Doctor Was A Woman: Stories of the First Women Physicians on the Frontier. Chris shares the inspiration behind the book, general medical situations that existed in the Old West, what inspired women to go west to set up their medical practice and reviews some of their challenges in medical school and in their practice. The book profiles the early lives and careers of 13 women who chose the medical field for their livelihood. Their stories are compelling and, at times, simply amazing. Written in Chris' always engaging and accessible style, we get to know these women; the challenges they faced, their creative solutions to medical emergencies and traumas, and the positive impact they had on both their communities and the medical field. In every profile Chris has uncovered their writings - perhaps to a medical journal, or personal notes, or newspaper articles.
In our discussion we meet, up close and personal, a few of these unique women including Sophie Herzog, Lillian Heath, and Bessie Efner - just to name a few!
We briefly introduce the next book Chris is releasing, pre-order now for October 2024 delivery. Tilghman: The Legendary Lawman and the Woman Who Inspired Him. Cowritten with Howard Kazanjian, this is not a biography in the usual sense of the word. Bill Tilghman's wife, Zoe, was a teacher and accomplished published author, and stood with him through all the trials associated with his job. At the time of Bill's death in 1924 she had only $80 to her name and knew a biography of his life would be a popular read. She set out to write his life's story, but ran into a number of obstacles. Using primary source documents provided to Chris and Howard by the family, this is the story of a woman's struggle to raise her three sons alone AND honor the life of he man she loved so dearly.
NEXT! August 8 Episode #97 Join us with our guest author HOWARD KAPLAN. We'll be discussing his political thriller The Syrian Sunset.
