SEPTEMBER 3, 2020 THE WRITER'S BLOCK RADIO SHOW
SHOW #273 A CONVERSATION WITH TROY D. SMITH
Just who is TROY D. SMITH? In his own words, "I am an author -I work in a variety of genres. My work has appeared in several venues since my first short story appeared in 1995. Since 1998 I have been a member of Western Writers of America, and in that same year one of my short nonfiction pieces was a finalist for the Spur Award. My first novel, Bound for the Promise-Land, was a Spur Award winner in 2001, as well as a finalist for the Medicine Pipe Bearer's Award. I earned my PhD in history at the University of Illinois in 2011, and since then have been teaching history at Tennessee Tech."
Here are some of Troy's favorite quotes. From Oakley Hall (author of the classic western novel Warlock): "The pursuit of truth, not of facts, is the business of fiction." From Elmer Kelton (paraphrased, as I can't find the exact quote): "I don't write about a good guy in a white hat versus a bad guy in a black hat- I write about two guys in gray hats, one trying to institute change and the other resisting it." And from myself: "I don't write about things that happen to people- I write about people that things happen to."
We'll be chatting with Troy about his newest collection of short stories, A BITTERSWEET AMALGAMATION.
