RENDEZVOUS WITH A WRITER: NATIONAL DOG DAY

HAVE YOU HAD a good laugh lately? When I found myself helplessly laughing out loud at the antics of Caesar, a Great Dane in Gary Paulsen's MY LIFE IN DOG YEARS, I realized how much I needed that laugh! And that's the thing about dogs; they can bring us to laughter and tears. Paulsen's wonderful book does both.
My Life In Dog Years by Gary Paulsen
National Dog Day is August 26, a time to reflect on (and maybe indulge) our own buddies. Why not add a comment to this post about your canine companion?
Bobbie The Wonder Dog by Tricia Brown and Cary Porter
If you've never heard of BOBBIE THE WONDER DOG, you're in for a treat. In August of 1923 a family drove from Oregon to Indiana to visit relatives. Their collie mix rode on top of the luggage secured to the back of the car. A month later, when the family packed up to return, Bobbie didn't show up. Heartbroken, the family left without him. Six months later, guess who appeared at the family's business! Bobbie's 2,500 mile trip made him famous. Follow the adventure yourself in Tricia Brown and Cary Porter's charming picture book.
Rin Tin Tin by Susan Orlean
Another famous dog laid a wreath on Bobbie's grave some years later, RIN TIN TIN, star of the silver screen. Susan Orlean, author of THE LIBRARY BOOK, wrote a magnificent biography of the German Shepherd dog.

Two collies enriched our family's life. We remember them here with much love and a smile - Samson and Abigail.
