Mike’s latest album, THE OUTSIDE CIRCLE, features ten songs about the wild west and cowboy life, past and present. It was released in June 2018 and was nominated for Album of the Year through the Academy of Western Artists. The title cut, "The Outside Circle," (co-written with Damon Rogers) won a Spur Award for "Song of the Year" from Western Writers of America. Another of Blakely's songs from the same album, "The Ballad of Josiah Wilbarger," was a finalist. Separately, the album was nominated for four awards through the International Western Music Association.

He is a winner of the Spur Award for Best Western Novel awarded by Western Writers of America. His newest novel, A SINISTER SPLENDOR, was published in February 2019. This sweeping historical saga chronicles the Mexican-American War of the 1840s through the fictionalized viewpoints of men and women who witnessed the conflict. The author uses real people as his character. Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, President James K. Polk, President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and many other point-of-view characters reveal the glories and the horrors of the war.
“Blakely is a consummate artist whose superb ability to capture an audience only serves to highlight his songwriting skills…which approach brilliance.” - Buddy Case, “The Loft,” Enola, AK.
