In the 1950's just about every town had a road race, be it an old airport, a closed down section of town, or a real race track. The glamorous desert hot spot know as Palm Springs was one such town. Drivers from all over Southern California would bring their prized MG's, Allards, Porsches, Morettis and even some home built japolies all to battle for honor, respect and the purse.

This description is provided by M&P Speed Shop:
1965 a dragstrip was built just a few miles north of us, next to the 210 freeway in Irwindale California. It was built by Harry Snider the founder of In-N-Out burgers. The old Irwindale was quite well known among locals for having the best track burgers anywhere (they were In-N-Out burgers without the tomato).

Irwindale was a track that definitely died as a result of local development: In 1977 the city of Irwindale bought the property and basically gave it to the Miller Brewing Co. The huge brewery that sits there now certainly makes more income for Irwindale than the track did. Gibbs quipped: "Lions went first then Irwindale then OCIR."
