The third Sunday of every month there is a special session sponsored by the local chapter of the WMA (Western Music Association) at my old stomping grounds, the Autry National Center. Held in Heritage Court, I have seen the audience for this monthly event grow from a handful of people to a faithful following of 100+. What started years ago with one or two local musicians, standing outside in the plaza, weathering blistering hot (or cold) temps has turned into a major monthly event. Musicians come from around the local area - some driving 100 miles or more to get there. One never knows who will show up - traveling musicians that find themselves in town on that Sunday are invited to come along.
Such was the story behind meeting Joe Green, a Texan. He was in town for a brief visit and made the monthly jam. I sat in the audience wondering who this handsome stranger was. Afterward, members of The Tumbling Tumbleweeds introduced me to him. Now, I'm introducing him to you. Enjoy JOE GREEN, Texas style!
Western musician and poet Joe Green stirs it up with his own brand of cowboy poetry and western music. This, his debut recording, Back to the Good Old Days, hit the top ten on all major cowboy and western music charts nationwide upon its release.

Texas Original - Live was recorded before a live studio audience at David and Carolyn Martin's Java Jive Studio in Joelton, Tennessee.
The CD features the original cowboy poetry, stories and songs of Joe Green with a few cowboy/western cover tunes. Produced by Grammy nominated Vaughn Skow, the project captures the originality, spontaneity and fun of a live Joe Green show.
The project features the guitar wizardry of Doc West, friend and frequent accompanist of Joe's. Friends David and Carolyn West joined the fun and enriched the project. David played upright bass and recoded the session. Carolyn contributed rhythm guitar, vocal harmonies and a remarkable vocal rendition of Vaya Con Dios.

Living, and working in the ranching community, he writes about the West as he sees it. Nominated by the Western Music Association in 2012 and again in 2013 for The Crescendo Award, he performs at popular festivals throughout the West including Heber City, Utah, Durango, Colorado, Elko, Nevada and Sierra Vista, Arizona. Opening for entertainers such as Baxter Black and Jon Chandler, G.T. plays the same stages as top performers Michael Martin Murphey, Dave Stamey, Juni Fisher, and Sons of the San Joaquin. His album, “Tough Horses,” was produced by renowned Cowboy Entertainer, Dave Stamey. “Tough Horses” was #1 on the Top 30 Album Play List for Western CD’s. The Mighty Fort Worth Stockyards!
A wild 'n wooly place called 'Cowtown,' with it's cowboys, gangsters, pens, packing houses, and rodeos, had its peak years between 1903 and 1947. After a devastating flood in May 1949, a decline set in that would not reverse until the mid-1970s, with it's designation as a national historic district.
Today there is plenty of pride in this Texas city "Where the West Begins," and once again, the Stockyards district is thriving and bustling, albeit a bit more civilized. As the historic Cowtown Coliseum, site of the world's first indoor rodeo, reaches it's centennial year in 2008, it seems appropriate to reflect on some of the lives and careers that were formed from the dust of this storied arena...
A Word About Cowtown Opry:
Founded in 1992 by western swing pianist, Jean Marlowe, Cowtown Opry's goal is to promote and perform Texas heritage music, specifically that stemming from the cattle ranching culture. A 501c3 non-profit organization, CTO has mentored adults and children in western music performance and repertoire by presenting regular Sunday afternoon shows in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. As talen coordinator since 1996, I find that western music performers are some of the finest people I have ever met, and it is a joy to share with them the music and history of the West!

Juni is known for her ballads steeped in history, lyrical storytelling, and for melodic tunes. If you love Western music you'll be a Juni Fisher fan! The title track says it all, Let'er Go, "Let'er Buck", Let'er Fly. "Let'er Buck" is Pendleton's tag line and Juni weaves it brillantly in this song. In the early days of rodeo, cowgirls competed in the same sports as cowboys including bronc ridin'. I like that she has placed a cowgirl atop the bucking bronc in this, the title song.

Riding for the Brand is Kerry Grombacher's second recording of contemporary cowboy and western songs, and it reveals Kerry's love of western folklore. His thought-provoking lyrics and innovative arrangements blend and intertwine to provide the listener with a delightfully colorful look at the west through the eyes of one who "came late to this country" - Kerry's own words in his lively swing tribute to the late and much loved western swing pioneer, Ray Reed. Although Kerry has only been writing and performing western music for a few years his sill as a songwriter is evident in this recording. From the touching "An Old Cowboy Growing Older," a poignant song about a dyng cowboy's remembrances, to the lovely "Morning Comes to Mission Santa Fe," a beautiful border love song, Kerry's songs will warm your heart and stir your emotions. Many times in life my trail has joined the trails of others on a similar journey and I have been blessed. We enjoyed an intimate "livingroom" concert at the home of mutual friends one evening and the following day enjoyed their performance as part of the Silver Screen Project live music event.
The ladies of Journey West include Audrey McLaughlin, Dawn Pett, and Gale Rogers. Not only do they perform the music of the Silver Screen Cowboy Era, they also enjoy the tight harmonies of the Big Band Era.
